Alghero is a rewarding summer destination with a dog if you plan around the heat and the seasonal beach rules. Use the dog beaches, walk in the cool hours, and keep entry paperwork in order. These tips cover the essentials for a smooth trip.
Sardinian summer heat is the biggest risk. From June to September, walk dogs before about 09:00 or after sunset, test paving with your hand, and avoid stone ramparts and asphalt at midday. Carry water on every outing and never leave a dog in a parked car.
Most Alghero beaches ban dogs during the summer bathing season. Use the two official dog beaches, Maria Pia and La Stalla near Fertilia, where dogs can swim in the fenced zones. Bring your own shade, water and waste bags, as facilities are minimal.
On ARST buses, small dogs travel free only in a 50x30x25 cm carrier, while medium and large dogs need a leash, muzzle, registration and a ticket, subject to the driver's discretion. A car is the easiest way to reach Capo Caccia and the dog beaches. Ferries to Sardinia accept dogs with leash, muzzle and pet-friendly cabins.
For Italy you need an EU pet passport (or health certificate from outside the EU), microchip and valid rabies vaccination. Many attractions, including the Neptune Grotto by land or boat, admit dogs on a leash and muzzle, so carry a muzzle for sightseeing as well as buses.
