Stockholm, spread across 14 islands at the point where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic, is a city that takes its relationship with nature seriously. Swedes are prolific dog owners (over 900,000 dogs nationwide, roughly one per ten people) and Stockholm's infrastructure reflects this: Djurgården island, the archipelago day trips and the city's extensive cycle and walking paths make it one of Europe's most naturally dog-friendly cities. The Gamla Stan (Old Town) island, with its 13th-century cobblestone alleys, is navigable with a calm dog; the surrounding water-city gives an almost unique sense of space for a European capital of 975,000 people.
The royal park island, home to the Vasa Museum, Skansen open-air museum and ABBA The Museum, is Stockholm's premier dog destination. The forested southern half is entirely off-leash; the northern path along the water offers spectacular views of the city. Dogs see deer here regularly.
Södermalm, Stockholm's bohemian southern island, is the most dog-friendly neighbourhood in the city. Tantolunden park has an allotment area, open lawns, a waterfront and a dedicated dog run. The café culture on SoFo (south of Folkungagatan) is excellent, with dogs welcome inside most establishments.
The world's first national city park, 27km² of forest, meadow, lakes and royal palaces within the city limits. Dogs on lead in the meadow zones; off-lead in the forested areas. Moose, deer and hares are regular sightings, keep your dog under control.
The medieval island at Stockholm's heart is navigable with a dog, especially in the morning before the tourist groups arrive. The cobblestone alleys (gränder) are narrow but the main square (Stortorget) and the waterfront paths are wide and welcoming to dogs.
Neither the Vasa Museum nor Skansen allows dogs inside. Skansen's outdoor areas allow dogs on lead in some sections, check the current rules on arrival. Both are worth a solo visit; plan dog time for Djurgården's forested southern paths meanwhile.
