Prague is one of the few European capitals to have emerged from both World Wars virtually intact. Its historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, preserves a millennium of architecture: Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque, Art Nouveau, Cubist, a unique concentration that makes it one of the world's most beautiful cities. Founded in the 9th century on the banks of the Vltava, Prague reached its peak under Charles IV (14th century), who made it the capital of the Holy Roman Empire. Today Prague is a compact, walkable city where dogs are welcome in virtually all pubs, wine bars and restaurants, a firmly established Czech tradition.
The former royal park (95 ha) in the Holešovice neighbourhood is the favourite park for Prague dogs. Designated off-leash areas, wide open spaces and ponds. Peaceful on weekdays, lively at weekends.
Letná Park overlooks the old town and offers a spectacular panoramic view of the bridges and Vltava. Dogs can go off-leash in the open areas. The Letná beer garden is one of Prague's nicest, dogs are welcome.
Prague's two most dog-friendly neighbourhoods outside the tourist centre. Welcoming pubs, trendy cafés and quiet streets. The Riegrovy sady (Vinohrady park) with its beer garden is unmissable.
Europe's most famous medieval bridge is open to pedestrians and dogs. Packed during the day, it recovers its calm before 7am and after 9pm, the ideal moment to walk across with your pet.
The Castle gardens (Královská zahrada) do not admit dogs. However, the South Gardens (Jižní zahrady) welcome dogs on leads and offer magnificent views over the city.
