Porto, Portugal's second city and the origin of port wine, sits on the dramatic granite gorge of the Douro river. With around 240,000 inhabitants, it has the warmth of a neighbourhood city and a dog culture that mirrors Lisbon's openness. Portuenses (Porto residents) are matter-of-fact about dogs in public spaces: café terraces, riverside promenades and tram cars all see dogs as a normal part of daily life. The Atlantic coast is minutes away, and the Douro Valley wine country, an extraordinary day trip, is one of the most scenic walking environments in Europe.
Porto's largest park, 83 hectares of ponds, meadows and Atlantic-facing gardens, is the city's premier dog walking destination. Off-leash zones, water features and a direct path to the sea make it unmissable.
The UNESCO-listed riverfront is one of Porto's most atmospheric walks. The narrow alleys of the Ribeira neighbourhood and the wide riverside promenade are perfect for dogs, most of the café terraces here welcome them warmly.
Where the Douro meets the Atlantic, the Foz neighbourhood has a seaside promenade and several dog-friendly beach stretches. In autumn and winter (out of beach season) the entire coastline opens to dogs.
A 1.5-hour drive east, the Douro Valley wine country is a revelation: terraced vineyards, ancient quintas and river views. Many quinta restaurants and wine estates welcome dogs on their terraces and in their gardens.
The famous Lello bookshop and the Clérigos Tower are not accessible to dogs. Worth visiting solo, the bookshop entry requires a ticket that is redeemable on purchase.
