Cluj-Napoca, the historic capital of Transylvania, is built on the foundations of the Roman city of Napoca along the Someșul Mic river. With more than 80,000 students, it is Romania's great university city: young, lively and known for a terrace culture where dogs are well tolerated. The centre tightens around Piața Unirii and the Gothic Church of St Michael, which animals may not enter but whose square remains a pleasant meeting point. On the heights, Cetățuia hill offers a panorama over the rooftops and surrounding hills, while Central Park Simion Bărnuțiu and its lake border the Cluj Arena. The famous, vast Hoia forest begins at the edge of town for long leashed hikes. The continental climate brings warm summers and cold, snowy winters, so spring and early autumn are the most comfortable seasons to travel with a dog.
The main central square, dominated by the Gothic Church of St Michael and the statue of Matthias Corvinus. Leashed dogs are welcome on the square, though not inside the church.
A hill crowned by a former citadel, reached on foot up a steep stairway, with the best panorama over the city and river. Leashed dogs are welcome on the paths and the viewpoint.
The city's oldest park, with a boating lake, shaded avenues and the neoclassical Casino, bordered by the Cluj Arena. Leashed dogs are allowed along the paths.
A large university botanical garden famed for its glasshouses and Japanese garden. Pets are not admitted except guide dogs; choose the nearby Central Park instead.
A large forest at the edge of town, famous for its legends and laced with trails and bike paths. Ideal for long hikes, with dogs best kept leashed near the mountain-bike areas.
A cobbled old-town square, the heart of terrace life around its obelisk and the Franciscan church. Leashed dogs are welcome at the cafés' outdoor tables.
