Brașov is a Transylvanian Saxon city of about 280,000 residents in central Romania, founded in 1234 by the Teutonic Knights at the foot of the Carpathian Mountains. For 700 years it was one of the seven walled Saxon citadels of southern Transylvania, and the Gothic Black Church (Biserica Neagră), the cobbled Piața Sfatului and the surrounding ring of medieval bastions are all preserved within easy walking distance. Today Brașov is Romania's most-visited mountain city: the Tâmpa cable car climbs straight from the old town to a 960 m forested summit crowned with a Hollywood-style "BRAȘOV" sign, and the day-trip triangle of Bran Castle, Râșnov Citadel and Peleș Castle in Sinaia is all within an hour by bus. For visitors with dogs, Brașov pairs unusually walkable cobbled streets and dog-tolerant café terraces with one essential caution: the surrounding Carpathian forests are active brown-bear territory.
Brașov's pastel-painted central square, ringed by Saxon merchant houses, baroque façades and the 1420 Council House (now the History Museum). Dogs on lead welcome throughout the square and on the surrounding pedestrian streets.
The Gothic Lutheran church that gives Brașov its symbol, built 1383–1477 and blackened by the great fire of 1689. The exterior, surrounding square and Honterus courtyard are dog-friendly on lead; the interior with its 16th-century Ottoman carpet collection does not admit pets.
The forested 960 m peak that rises directly behind the old town, crowned by the giant white "BRAȘOV" Hollywood-style sign. Cable car or hiking trails (yellow triangle gentlest, 1 h to summit); dogs on lead throughout, brown-bear awareness essential.
Famously one of the narrowest streets in Europe at 1.3 m wide, a 60 m alley between Strada Cerbului and Strada Poarta Schei. Dogs on lead welcome (small dogs only practical); the most photographed alley in town, busy on weekend afternoons.
The 14th-century clifftop fortress 30 km from Brașov, marketed worldwide as "Dracula's Castle". The 22-hectare park, courtyards and outdoor terraces are dog-friendly on lead; the castle museum interior is not. Bus 1820 from Brașov bus station, 1 h.
A 13th-century Saxon hilltop fortress 15 km from Brașov, restored as an outdoor open-air museum. The entire ramparts, courtyards and viewpoints are dog-friendly on lead. Bus 1820 (continues past Bran), 45 min from Brașov.
