Villefranche-sur-Mer nestles in one of the deepest natural harbours on the French Riviera, between Nice and Cap Ferrat, in the Alpes-Maritimes. Founded in the thirteenth century by Charles of Anjou as a free port (hence its name), it has kept a colourful old town tumbling down to the sea, watched over by the Citadelle Saint-Elme built in the sixteenth century by the dukes of Savoy. Its exceptional depth made it a favoured anchorage for navies the world over and, today, for cruise ships. Visitors wander the Rue Obscure, a one-of-a-kind medieval vaulted lane, and admire the Chapelle Saint-Pierre decorated by Jean Cocteau. A few minutes from Nice by train or bus, it offers the traveller with a dog a postcard setting, a lively fishing harbour and the coastal path towards neighbouring Cap Ferrat.
A maze of colourful lanes tumbling down to the harbour, including the Rue Obscure, a thirteenth-century vaulted medieval passage unique on the coast. All walkable on a leash, away from traffic.
A former fishermen's chapel on the harbour, entirely decorated in 1957 by Jean Cocteau with frescoes on the life of Saint Peter. The interior is ticketed and closed to dogs; the facade and quay can be enjoyed freely.
A sixteenth-century fortress built by the dukes of Savoy above the harbour, now the town hall and museums. The gardens and outer ramparts are free to visit with a leashed dog, overlooking the bay.
The traditional fishing port and the darse with its colourful boats, lined with terraces below the old town. A very pleasant flat stroll on a leash, among nets, wooden boats and views of Cap Ferrat.
A long crescent of sand at the head of the bay, backed by a promenade along the railway line. Dogs are banned on the beach in summer; the promenade stays open on a leash year-round.
A coastal path that loops around the neighbouring Cap Ferrat peninsula, through pines, coves and Belle Époque villas. A spectacular trail open to leashed dogs, best done early morning in summer to avoid the heat.
