Vancouver rises on the ancestral territory of the Coast Salish peoples, the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh, whose presence predates the modern city by millennia. Growing out of the Gastown sawmill settlement of 1867, the city was incorporated in 1886 and named after Captain George Vancouver, then became the Pacific terminus of the Canadian Pacific Railway. Stanley Park opened as early as 1888, setting the city's outdoor DNA. Today this Pacific metropolis of about 660,000 residents, hemmed by ocean, the North Shore mountains and rainforest, has one of the country's highest dog-ownership rates. For a dog owner it is an outdoor paradise but a rule-bound one: leashed by default, more than thirty off-leash areas, seasonal dog beaches, and above all a transit system that is effectively closed to larger dogs.
The city's great green lung, a forested peninsula ringed by a roughly 9 km seawall. Leashed dogs are welcome all along the seawall and trails, with a single fenced off-leash area near Ceperley Field; most park beaches are closed to dogs in summer.
A huge forest park of over 750 hectares next to UBC, with kilometres of second-growth woodland trails. Many trails allow off-leash dogs under voice control, making it the best proper forest run within the city limits.
The western end of this long beach holds a large designated off-leash zone on a rocky, tide-flat shore with superb sunset and mountain views. Dog access is seasonal, generally allowed from about September to April.
A former industrial peninsula turned arts and food district under the Granville Bridge, reached with a dog on the leashed-dog-friendly Aquabus. Dogs are welcome in the outdoor lanes and on patios, but not inside the Public Market building.
This East Vancouver park around Trout Lake has one of the city's most popular fenced off-leash areas plus a designated dog-swim spot on the lake shore. A social hub where local dogs gather all year round.
A 140-metre suspension bridge swaying above the Capilano River canyon on the North Shore. Leashed dogs may cross the bridge and walk the grounds, but not the Raptors Ridge birds-of-prey area or the gift shop; confirm the rules before visiting.
