Founded in 1642 as Ville-Marie on an island in the St Lawrence long frequented by Iroquoian peoples, Montréal became the great fur-trade post and then, with the digging of the Lachine Canal in 1825, the industrial heart of Canada. The city overtook Québec City, drew successive waves of Irish, Jewish, Italian and Haitian immigration, and remained the largest French-speaking metropolis in the Americas. Parc du Mont-Royal, laid out by Frederick Law Olmsted in 1876, gave it a green lung, and Expo 67 gave it a modern face. Today Montréal is one of the few genuinely dog-workable big cities in North America: more than 65 fenced dog runs, 14.5 km of car-free canal path, a terrasse culture running from May to October, and above all a métro that carries muzzled dogs now that the STM has made its pilot permanent.
The wooded hill at the centre of the island, laid out by Frederick Law Olmsted, with the chemin Olmsted climbing gently to the Kondiaronk lookout and its view over the whole city. Dogs are welcome throughout on a leash, and walking off-trail is prohibited.
A Parks Canada national historic site: 14.5 km of flat, car-free path from the Old Port out to Lachine, past locks, grain silos and converted factories. Pets must be leashed at all times on canal grounds.
Two kilometres of the promenade des Quais between the Clock Tower and the Bonsecours basin, lined with moored boats and the cobbles of Old Montréal. Leashed pets are allowed on the promenade but barred from the buildings and the Plage de l'Horloge.
The large fenced dog run in Parc Jarry, near the pool on the rue Gary-Carter side, open daily from 7:00 to 23:00. A maximum of two dogs per person, and the City states the dog must wear its Montréal tag.
The two islands in the St Lawrence facing downtown, with the Biosphère dome, the Gilles-Villeneuve circuit and long riverside trails. Leashed dogs are admitted in the green spaces and on the trails but excluded from the park facilities and the Jean-Doré beach.
The neo-Gothic masterpiece on Place d'Armes, with its deep-blue starred vault, is still the most visited monument in the city. Like every indoor site in Montréal it is closed to pets apart from service dogs, so plan a sitter for this visit.
