Outside a marked off-leash area, a dog in a Seattle park must be on a lead. This is not the loosely observed convention it is in some European cities: the Seattle Animal Shelter patrols, fines for a loose dog or a failure to pick up start around fifty dollars and run to a hundred and fifty, and at the water's edge the figure quoted for a dog on a beach reaches five hundred. Dogs are also barred from athletic fields, children's play areas and the ponds, fountains and streams inside parks. The practical consequence for a visitor is simple: decide each morning whether the day contains an off-leash area or not, and if it does not, keep the lead clipped on all day.
From late October to March Seattle gets between 100 and 160 mm of rain a month, mostly as a fine, persistent drizzle rather than downpours, with daytime highs around 8 to 12 C. A short-coated dog needs a waterproof, and a towel in the car is not optional. Summer is the opposite problem and it has changed: July and August are dry and often reach the high twenties, and heat events now regularly push Seattle past 30 C while wildfire smoke drifts in from eastern Washington and Oregon. Smoke matters as much as heat for a dog. Short-muzzled breeds, puppies, older dogs and any animal with heart or lung disease are the most affected, panting from heat pulls more smoke-laden air into the lungs, and vets advise wiping down the coat, mouth and eyes after time outside. When a heat advisory and an air quality alert overlap, cool filtered indoor air beats any walk that is not strictly necessary.
The pattern that works in Seattle is an outdoor morning, a covered taproom in the afternoon and a daycare booked for the one day you want to go inside a museum or up the Space Needle. A car-free version is realistic: King County Metro buses take a leashed dog of any size for the price of a second fare, and they reach Ballard, Fremont, West Seattle and Magnuson Park. Keep the big off-leash runs for the days you have a car or, for Marymoor, the days the Sound Transit dog policy is confirmed as published. Two long, flat, dog-legal walks tie the sights together: the Elliott Bay Trail from the Olympic Sculpture Park north through Myrtle Edwards Park, and the Burke-Gilman Trail from Gas Works Park west towards Fremont and Ballard.
