Dog Rules & Law
Dogs must be leashed on streets, promenades and beaches. Under Galician rules dogs are banned from beaches during the bathing season (1 June to 30 September) and allowed leashed off-season, though exact dates are set by each town hall. Potentially dangerous breeds (PPP) must be leashed and muzzled in public, and Spain's 2023 Animal Welfare Law (Ley 7/2023) adds national rules such as never leaving a dog unattended in public. Always pick up waste.
Atlantic Islands National Park
The Cíes and Ons islands are the region's headline day trips, but they lie in the Atlantic Islands National Park, where all pets are banned to protect the ecosystem, guide dogs excepted. Do not board an island ferry with your dog, it is the most common mistake here. Plan island days for when a companion can dog-sit, or explore the mainland dunes and rías with your dog instead.
Beach Season, Weather & Paperwork
Sanxenxo has no dog beach; its beaches ban dogs 1 June to 30 September, with the year-round dog beaches at O Grove about 20 km away. Galicia's Atlantic climate is mild and green but wet, so pack a towel and rain gear even in summer. For entry to Spain, EU visitors need an EU pet passport, microchip and valid rabies vaccination; non-EU visitors need an animal health certificate and should check MAPA rules in advance.
