Cyclades summers are intense, with July and August highs around 30C and strong sun. Walk dogs at dawn and after sunset, avoid hot sand, paving and marble paths in the middle of the day, and always carry water. Shade is genuinely scarce on beaches and inland trails.
On the ferry, dogs need a muzzle and leash on open decks and a reserved pet cabin or kennel, not the lounges. On the island, KTEL buses only take small dogs up to 10 kg in a carrier at the driver's discretion, so a medium or large dog means renting a car or using a pet-friendly taxi.
Beach rules are informal: outside the organised sunbed and bar sections, dogs are usually welcome on quieter coves like Kolymbithres and around Aliki. In the villages, keep dogs leashed in busy lanes and near grazing goats and sheep on the inland trails, and pick up after them everywhere.
May, June, September and early October are the sweet spot for a dog: warm sea, gentler sun, quieter beaches and easier ferries than the July-August peak. High summer is doable but demands strict early-and-late routines, while winter is mild and very quiet, with some seasonal tavernas and hotels closed.
