The former capital of Gallia Narbonensis, Narbonne was founded in 118 BCE as the first Roman colony outside Italy and grew into one of the great ports of the western Mediterranean. Its decline began when the river Aude shifted its course in the late Middle Ages, pushing the sea back and silting up the harbour; the town then turned to the wine trade, which remains the soul of this corner of Occitania. The past still shows in the unfinished Saint-Just cathedral, the Palace of the Archbishops and the underground galleries of the Roman Horreum. The Canal de la Robine, a UNESCO World Heritage site, cuts through the centre beneath the covered Pont des Marchands. For anyone travelling with a dog, Narbonne offers a flat, tree-lined centre, a shaded canal towpath made for long walks, and beaches plus the La Clape massif just fifteen minutes away.
A UNESCO-listed branch of the Canal du Midi running through Narbonne, lined with plane trees. Its flat, shaded towpath is the finest dog walk in town.
A Gothic cathedral left unfinished, its choir soaring to 41 m, among the tallest in France. Dogs are not allowed inside; the cloister and courtyard can be seen on the leash.
A vast fortified bishops' palace over the town-hall square, with its 13th-century keep. The indoor museums do not allow dogs; the adjoining Passage de l'Ancre can be walked on the leash.
A rare inhabited bridge lined with shops, spanning the Canal de la Robine in the heart of town. You cross it on foot with your dog on the leash, between colourful facades and storefronts.
The underground galleries of a Roman warehouse from the 1st century BCE, the only standing ancient structure you can visit in Narbonne. A narrow museum space where dogs are not admitted.
A limestone massif clad in garrigue between town and sea, threaded with trails and opening onto the beaches of Narbonne-Plage and Gruissan 15 min away. Ideal for dog hiking outside the summer season.
