Set between the Atlantic and the Everglades, Miami is a tropical metropolis in Florida, born at the turn of the twentieth century and shaped by successive waves of migrants, notably Cubans, who gave it its Latin-Caribbean soul. South Beach lines up its pastel Art Deco hotels along Ocean Drive, while Wynwood covers its walls with giant murals and Little Havana lives to the rhythm of dominoes and Cuban coffee. It is a hot, humid, sprawling city where you mostly get around by car, even if South Beach is walkable. For dogs, Florida is demanding: most beaches ban animals, heat and humidity can be dangerous, and hurricane season runs from June to November. Well prepared, the traveller with a dog will find lively sidewalks, parks, welcoming patios and a few dedicated dog beaches along the coast.
The Art Deco district of South Beach, with Ocean Drive and its 1930s pastel faรงades. Leashed dogs are allowed on the sidewalks and promenade, but not on most of the sand, where they are banned.
The Wynwood arts district, famous for its huge open-air street-art murals. Leashed dogs stroll the streets and past the painted walls; the ticketed Wynwood Walls enclosure may, however, turn them away.
The bayfront park downtown and the walkway along the Miami River, with views of skyscrapers and boats. Open spaces where leashed dogs are welcome, best walked early in the morning in the heat.
The Italian-Renaissance-style villa and its formal gardens on Biscayne Bay. The estate admits service animals only; pet dogs are not allowed, even in the gardens.
The island of Key Biscayne and the sprawling Crandon Park, popular for their beaches and bike paths. Dogs are banned on the sand and the park beaches; check the local rules before heading over.
Hollywood's official dog beach, north of Miami, one of the few where dogs are allowed on the sand under set hours and a permit. Ideal for a supervised swim, outside the hottest hours.
