Dog Rules & Law
Dogs must be leashed on all streets, promenades and beaches, and off-leash is legal only inside the fenced parques caninos and on the Castillo Sohail dog beach. Waste must always be picked up. Under Spanish law breeds classified as potentially dangerous (PPP) must be leashed and muzzled in public, and Spain's 2023 Animal Welfare Law (Ley 7/2023) adds national rules such as never leaving a dog unattended in public.
Heat & Paw Safety
The Costa del Sol enjoys over 300 sunny days a year, but July and August are hot (highs around 30 C) and the promenade paving and sand get scorching by midday. Walk at dawn or dusk, test the ground with the back of your hand, carry water, and use the shaded riverside park and the Río Chíllar-style shade of the old town rather than open beaches at noon.
Beach Season & Travel Paperwork
Only the Castillo Sohail dog beach is open to dogs in summer; on every other Fuengirola beach dogs are banned from 1 June to 30 September (fines from 100 euros), then allowed leashed off-season. For entry to Spain, EU visitors need an EU pet passport, microchip and valid rabies vaccination; non-EU visitors need an animal health certificate and should check MAPA rules in advance.
