Carnac lies on the southern coast of Morbihan, in Brittany, facing the bay of Quiberon. The town owes its worldwide fame to its Neolithic alignments: more than three thousand standing stones raised nearly seven thousand years ago in long straight rows across the heaths of Le Ménec, Kermario and Kerlescan, the largest megalithic complex in the world. Around this stone sanctuary, the town divides between the old village, clustered around the church of Saint-Cornély, patron of horned beasts, and Carnac-Plage, a seaside resort born in the early twentieth century along long sandy beaches. Salt marshes, oyster beds and the GR34 coastal path complete the setting. Travelling here with a dog means working around the great Atlantic tides, the summer beach restrictions and the access rules of the megalithic site.
The famous rows of standing stones at Le Ménec, Kermario and Kerlescan, an open-air Neolithic sanctuary. Leashed dogs are allowed on the surrounding paths, but from May to September the fields are fenced and access between the stones is limited to guided tours, though the site stays visible from outside.
The largest burial mound in continental Europe, an artificial hill raised around 5000 BC and topped by a chapel. You can walk around it and climb to the top on leash for a view over the bay, though the inner chamber is not open to visitors.
The village church, dedicated to Saint Cornély, protector of horned cattle, with its Renaissance facade and carved porch. The interior is not open to dogs, but the square and the old lanes around it can be walked on leash.
The resort's five sandy beaches, including the Grande Plage, lined with a promenade and Belle Époque villas. From June to September dogs are banned during bathing hours, so fall back on the wilder tolerant beaches such as Légenèse or the nearby Côte Sauvage, while off-season access on leash stays open.
The salt marshes and oyster beds of the bay, between Carnac and the Crac'h river, criss-crossed by dikes and paths. You can walk them on leash among the water birds, and several oyster huts offer terrace tastings where a dog is welcome.
The wild coast of the nearby Quiberon peninsula, Atlantic-battered cliffs and small coves followed by the GR34. Leashed dogs are allowed year-round on the path, and off-season several coves tolerate a swim, but beware of the currents and powerful waves.
