Béziers

A staircase of several successive locks on the Canal du Midi, Riquet's masterpiece and one of the most visited sites in the Languedoc. The towpath running alongside the locks can be walked with a leashed dog, in the shade of the plane trees.

A fortified Gothic cathedral overlooking the Orb from its promontory, whose terrace offers one of the finest views over the town and the vineyards. The esplanade and the bishop's garden around it can be visited on a leash, but the cathedral interior is closed to dogs.

A large English-style landscaped garden south of the Allées Paul-Riquet, with its century-old trees, pond and statues of poets. Leashed dogs are allowed on its shaded paths, a welcome haven of coolness in the hot hours.

A medieval stone bridge spanning the Orb, from which you take in the silhouette of the cathedral rising on its hill. The walk across and the banks of the Orb below make a pretty on-leash stroll away from the traffic.

A grand plane-tree-lined promenade at the heart of Béziers, edged with cafés, terraces and a statue of Riquet, animated by markets. A shaded on-leash stroll ideal for wandering; plenty of terraces to pause with your dog.

A Mediterranean seaside resort about fifteen minutes south of Béziers, with its long sandy beach and harbour. Dogs face summer restrictions on the main beach; aim for the designated dog zones and permitted hours.
