New Zealand has no pet passport and one of the strictest biosecurity systems in the world, so an imported dog is a project measured in months, not weeks. You need a permit to import obtained before travel, an ISO microchip, rabies vaccination and a rabies antibody titre test, plus the internal and external parasite treatments set out for your country's category. Every cat and dog except those coming from Australia must then spend a minimum of ten days in an MPI-approved quarantine facility, an MPI vet inspects the animal within 72 hours of arrival, and the quarantine booking confirmation has to accompany the import permit application. A new import health standard was issued on 12 May 2026 and took effect on 1 July 2026, with a transition period during which the 2021 requirements are still accepted, and from 1 October 2026 the rabies titre test and clinical examination must be preceded by an official identity check at least six months before shipment. Planning the day around the off-peak windows
The 09:00 to 15:00 and after-18:30 rule on buses and trains shapes an Auckland day more than any map does. The practical pattern is to walk the dog locally first thing, board a bus or train from about 09:00, spend the middle of the day out, and be back on board before 15:00 or wait until after 18:30. If you need to cross the city during the peak, the ferry is your workaround: harbour services carry dogs at any hour of the day, so a Devonport or Bayswater crossing at 17:00 is legal when the same journey on the bus is not. Weekends and public holidays remove the restriction entirely, which is why the Saturday morning ferries out of the downtown terminal carry so many dogs. If you are driving instead, note that Auckland summer parking near the beaches fills early and a dog must never be left in a parked car: New Zealand summer sun is fierce because of the thin ozone layer over these latitudes, and a closed car heats faster here than the outside temperature suggests.
