Auckland is the rare big city where a dog of any size rides public transport, free on every bus and train outside the weekday peaks with a basket muzzle, and free on the harbour ferries at any hour. Top spots for pets include Meola Reef Reserve, the only fully fenced off-leash park in the central city, the Waiatarua Reserve wetland loop, and Saint Leonards Beach, off the lead around the clock, especially around the Devonport peninsula, Wynyard Quarter on the waterfront, and Grey Lynn along Great North Road.

Auckland, Tฤmaki Makaurau in Mฤori, sits on a narrow isthmus between two harbours, the Waitematฤ to the north and the Manukau to the south, on a volcanic field of some fifty cones, many still terraced with the earthworks of Mฤori pฤ. The region was among the most densely settled in New Zealand before European arrival, precisely because volcanic soils and two sea accesses made it a strategic place. Chosen as the colonial capital in 1840, the city lost that status to Wellington in 1865 but never its demographic lead: about 1.7 million people live here today, a third of the country, and it remains the largest Polynesian city in the world. For a dog it is one of the most workable cities in the southern hemisphere: buses, trains and ferries all take one, more than two thousand parks and beaches are open to them, and the sea is never more than a few minutes away. The trade-off comes down to one word: conservation.
A reclaimed landfill on a lava spit at Westmere, now the only fully fenced off-leash dog park in central Auckland, with a separate pen for small dogs and a shoreline spot for those that love water.
The highest natural volcanic cone in the city, with its 50 m crater and a 360 degree view over both harbours. Dogs are on the lead on the maunga itself, but there is a fenced off-leash paddock between the Clive Road and Summit Road entrances.
A working farm in the middle of the city, gifted to the nation in 1901 and wrapped around the One Tree Hill cone. Leads are required throughout, and restricted zones close to dogs during lambing and calving from 17 July to 10 September.
Twelve minutes by ferry from downtown, dog free of charge, for a Victorian village, the climb up Takarunga and the North Head tunnels facing Rangitoto. The whole day works on foot and on the lead from the wharf.
The one Hauraki Gulf island that welcomes dogs, 40 minutes away by ferry. Eight of its busiest beaches close to dogs between 10:00 and 18:00 from 1 December to 1 March, while Hooks Lane and Owhanake stay open all year.
The rainforest of the western hills, which holds Piha and Karekare, is closed to pet dogs: only registered assistance dogs may enter, to slow kauri dieback and protect ground-nesting birds.
