Getting Around Zermatt with a Dog

Zermatt station is the terminus of the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn (MGBahn), with frequent service to Visp (where SBB IC trains connect to Geneva, Zurich, Milan), and the famous Glacier Express to St Moritz. Small dogs in carrier ride free; larger dogs leashed+muzzled at half-fare adult ticket. The Täsch–Zermatt shuttle (12 min, included in MGBahn tickets) runs every 20 min from 06:00–22:00.

Zermatt Bergbahnen operates a network of funiculars and cable cars: Sunnegga funicular, Blauherd & Rothorn cable cars (Five Lakes area), Klein Matterhorn (the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise at 3,883 m, Europe's highest cable-car station), and the Furi-Schwarzsee cable car. All accept leashed dogs (small dogs free, large dogs CHF 5–10 return depending on the line). Klein Matterhorn altitude is risky for dogs — do not stay long above 3,500 m.

Geneva Airport (GVA) is the most convenient international gateway to Zermatt: direct SBB trains run Geneva Airport → Visp → Zermatt with one easy transfer in Visp, about 3.5 h total. Zurich (ZRH) is similar in time (3.5 h). The airport follows EU/Swiss pet rules (microchip + EU pet passport + rabies vaccination; UK travellers need AHC). All trains accept dogs with the Swiss half-fare rules.
