Dog-Friendly Walks and Fells around Windermere

Off-leash zone: Dogs can be off-lead under close control on the wooded path and summit, but there are sheep on the surrounding fields and open fell, so lead up whenever livestock is in sight.

💡 Go early or late for the clearest lake views and the quietest summit; the last field before the top usually has sheep, so have the lead ready.

Off-leash zone: Off-lead in the water and in the south meadow outside the cattle-grazing weeks; on a lead in the parkland, on the lakeshore paths and in the café.

💡 A rare-breed Albion cattle herd grazes the south meadow for a few weeks a year, when dogs go back on the lead there; check the on-site signs, and watch for blue-green algae before letting a dog swim.

Off-leash zone: None; dogs must stay on a lead at all times across the grounds, and are not allowed in the adventure playground.

💡 The grounds are free to walk and give some of the easiest flat lakeshore access near town; you can also arrive dog-and-all by the Windermere Lake Cruise that stops at the Brockhole jetty.
