Trento's compact Renaissance centre, its frescoed Piazza del Duomo and the mountains that rise straight from town make it an easy city to sightsee with a dog. Most highlights are outdoors and reached on foot or by the Sardagna funivia.

The prince-bishops' castle is Trento's landmark, and its gardens, entered through the Porta dei Diamanti, are a public green space where leashed dogs of any size are welcome. Inside the museum itself only small dogs carried or in a carrier are admitted.

Funivia Trento-Sardagna, Via Lung'Adige Monte Grappa, 38122 Trento
Ride the funivia 400 m up to Sardagna's terrace over the Adige valley, then continue by road to the Viote plain at about 1,500 m on Monte Bondone, a favourite summer escape with dog-friendly trails and picnic meadows. The alpine botanical garden at Le Viote does not admit dogs, but the plain and play area around it do.
