Tenerife is one of Europe's best winter-sun escapes for dog owners: 22-26 C year-round, an EU pet-passport destination with no quarantine, and a south coast built for outdoor living. The keys to a smooth trip are picking the right base (Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos or El Mรฉdano in the south), planning around the heat and the altitude of Teide, and knowing that designated dog-beach and trail access varies by municipality.
While much of Europe is cold and dark from November to March, the south of Tenerife sits around 22-26 C with reliable sun, making it one of the few places a European can give a dog daily beach and terrace time in midwinter. Because the Canary Islands are part of Spain and the EU, there is no quarantine: an EU pet passport, ISO microchip and current rabies vaccination are enough. Combined with direct winter charter flights into TFS, it is one of the easiest warm-weather destinations to reach with a pet.
The south is dry and shadeless: from June to September, dark volcanic sand and asphalt can burn paw pads between midday and late afternoon, so walk at dawn or after sunset and carry water everywhere. Teide is the opposite problem: at 2,000 m and above it can be near freezing and windy even in summer, and the sharp lava rock is hard on paws, so bring layers, water and consider booties. The north and Anaga are cooler and greener for hot-day hikes.
Spanish and Canarian rules require dogs to be leashed in public spaces, and breeds legally classed as potentially dangerous (PPP) must be muzzled and on a short leash in public. Designated dog-beach and trail access varies by municipality and changes over time, so always check the current Ayuntamiento signage on the spot, especially at beaches and in protected reserves like Teide, Anaga and Montaรฑa Roja. Carry waste bags; Canarian towns enforce fines for not picking up.
