Tarifa, the southernmost point of mainland Europe, is shaped by two things travellers with dogs feel immediately: the wind (Levante from the east, Poniente from the west) and the proximity of Morocco across the Strait of Gibraltar. Plan around the beach season, the wind, and the fact that you may want to use Tarifa as a launch pad for a Tangier day.
Tarifa is mild year-round but the wind is famous: the Levante (east) is dry, hot and gusting 50-80 km/h, the Poniente (west) cooler and wetter. In a strong Levante the sand of Los Lances stings even human skin; choose Bolonia (more sheltered) or wait it out in the casco antiguo. From June to September, asphalt in the casco antiguo can reach 50 C between 12:00 and 18:00, hot enough to burn paw pads in seconds. Walk early or after sunset.
The 35-minute FRS or Inter Shipping ferry to Tangier MED is one of Tarifa`s most distinctive day-trip options. Bringing the dog is possible but it is a Schengen exit: bring EU pet passport, microchip and current rabies vaccination, and for entering mainland Morocco a vet health certificate dated within 10 days. The simpler choice is often to leave the dog with a Tarifa sitter for the day and travel light; both options work.
Dogs must be leashed in every public space in Tarifa, and dogs over 20 kg or classed as potentially dangerous must wear a muzzle in the street. Off-leash running is at the owner`s judgement on remote stretches of Los Lances out of season or in the Pinar del Bujeo forest. City beaches close to dogs in the central supervised zones from June to September; Bolonia stays workable year-round on the quieter ends.
