Dog-Friendly Attractions in Syracuse

The island old town of Ortigia is the heart of Syracuse, a maze of honey-coloured baroque streets opening onto the magnificent Piazza Duomo. It is almost entirely open-air and pedestrian, so a leashed dog can join you for the whole stroll past the cathedral, markets and seafront.

A legendary freshwater spring on the Ortigia seafront, ringed by papyrus plants and home to ducks and fish, set just above the harbour. It is an open-air viewpoint you reach on foot along the Lungomare, so a leashed dog can take in the famous spring and sea views with you.

Syracuse's great archaeological park holds the Greek Theatre, the Roman amphitheatre, the Ear of Dionysius cave and the vast Altar of Hieron, among ancient quarries and olive groves. Dogs are admitted on a leash and with a muzzle (or in a carrier if small), making it one of the rare major monuments you can visit with your dog.
