St Ives is a rewarding place to bring a dog, but two things need planning: the seasonal beach dog rules, which are enforced with fines, and the post-Brexit paperwork for bringing a dog into Great Britain. Get both right and this is one of Cornwall's easiest dog holidays.
Bringing your dog into Great Britain (post-Brexit)
Since Brexit, Great Britain no longer accepts the EU Pet Passport for entry. Dogs arriving from the EU need a GB Animal Health Certificate (AHC) issued by an official vet within 10 days of travel, plus a microchip and a valid rabies vaccination, and dogs also need an approved tapeworm (Echinococcus) treatment recorded 24 to 120 hours before arrival. A GB pet passport issued in Great Britain is also valid. Arrange this with your vet before you leave, as it cannot be done on arrival.
Planning around the beach dog rules
The seasonal bans only cover 10am to 6pm, so early-morning and evening beach walks are always allowed, even on the restricted sands. In high summer, Porthmeor, Porthminster and Carbis Bay are off-limits to dogs 10am to 6pm from 15 May to 30 September, and St Ives Harbour beach and Porthgwidden from 1 July to 31 August. Bamaluz Beach, Lambeth Walk and the north side of Smeaton's Pier stay open to dogs all year. Enforcement officers issue 100-pound fines, so always read the signs at each beach on arrival.
When to visit and the weather
St Ives has one of the mildest climates in Britain, with soft, frost-rare winters and warm rather than hot summers. Spring and autumn are ideal for a dog: the weather is gentle, the town is calmer, and the beach dog bans are either not yet in force or already lifted. If you come in July or August, simply build the day around early and late beach walks and the year-round dog beaches, and you will barely notice the restrictions.
