Sibenik rewards dog owners who plan around the Dalmatian summer heat and the city's steep stone old town. Dogs are welcome on leash across the fortresses, the Riva and most terraces, but the hottest hours and the sun-baked stone call for early-morning and evening walks.
Croatian law requires dogs to be kept on a leash in public, and dogs in public transport must generally be muzzled and leashed. Owners must clean up after their dog, and fines apply. There is no off-leash dog park in Sibenik.
July and August highs reach around 29C and the old-town stone radiates heat into the evening. Walk dogs early morning or after sunset, keep them off bare stone in midday sun, and always carry water. Press the pavement with your hand. If it is too hot for your palm, it is too hot for paws.
Late spring (May to June) and early autumn (September to October) are ideal, with warm sea, manageable temperatures and dog beaches open. High summer is hot and busy. Mild winters are quiet and pleasant for old-town walks, with the Barone and St John's fortresses free off-season.
Take a leashed-dog day out to Krka National Park, about 15 km away via Skradin. Dogs are allowed on the boardwalk trails on a leash, though not on Visovac Island and not swimming in the rivers. Bring water, a leash and a muzzle to be safe on any park transport.
