Bringing your dog into Great Britain (post-Brexit)
Since Brexit, Great Britain no longer accepts the EU Pet Passport for entry. Dogs arriving from the EU need a GB Animal Health Certificate (AHC) issued by an official vet within 10 days of travel, plus a microchip and a valid rabies vaccination, and dogs also need an approved tapeworm (Echinococcus) treatment recorded 24 to 120 hours before arrival. A GB pet passport issued in Great Britain is also valid. Arrange this with your vet before you leave, as it cannot be done on arrival.
Planning around the beach dog rules
The one strict rule is South Sands, which bans dogs completely from 1 May to 30 September, day and night. In those months head instead to North Sands, dog-friendly all year, or take the little ferry across to Mill Bay at East Portlemouth, where dogs are welcome year-round on a lead. Fines for breaches run up to 100 pounds, so read the signs at each beach, which the South Hams order can update.
When to visit and the weather
Salcombe has a mild south Devon climate: gentle winters around 9 to 10 C and warm, rarely scorching summers around 18 C. Late spring and early autumn are the sweet spot for a dog, with quieter streets, and from October to April every beach, including South Sands, is open to dogs again. High summer is glorious but busy, so lean on North Sands and Mill Bay.
