Rimini was founded by the Romans in 268 BC as Ariminum, a strategic hub where the Via Flaminia met the Via Emilia. From that era it preserves the Tiberius Bridge, completed around 21 AD and still in use, and the Arch of Augustus. In the 15th century, under Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta, the architect Leon Battista Alberti reworked the church of San Francesco into the Tempio Malatestiano, an early-Renaissance masterpiece. In the 20th century Rimini became the seaside-tourism capital of the Adriatic Riviera and the birthplace of filmmaker Federico Fellini, whose world pervades the colourful Borgo San Giuliano. For the traveller with a dog, Rimini is a rare combination: a long sandy shore with a dedicated dog beach, a fenced off-leash park beside the Marecchia river, a flat and pedestrian Roman and Renaissance centre, and a broadly dog-friendly Romagna cafรฉ culture.
Rimini's only fully dedicated dog beach and the largest on the Emilia-Romagna coast, with over 150 umbrellas and fenced off-leash 'suites'.
The city's largest urban park (~235,000 mยฒ) on the river's old bed, with the fenced FIDOPARK area where dogs run free of leash and muzzle.
Roman bridge of Istrian stone completed around 21 AD, still in use, linking the centre to Borgo San Giuliano. Fully outdoors, dog-friendly on a leash.
The old fishermen's quarter of pastel houses and murals inspired by Fellini's films. Fully pedestrian, perfect for wandering with a dog.
Early-Renaissance masterpiece by Leon Battista Alberti with a white marble facade. Outdoor view dog-friendly; interior assistance dogs only.
Leafy seafront park between the Grand Hotel and the beach, with a fountain, shaded lawns and benches. Leashed dogs welcome, 15 min from the centre.
