Nauthólsvík Geothermal Beach
Nauthólsvegur, 101 Reykjavik
Reykjavik's remarkable urban geothermal beach, Nauthólsvík is a sheltered golden sand bay where geothermal hot water pumped into the lagoon raises the sea temperature to 18–20°C. In a country where the sea is otherwise around 8°C year-round, this is extraordinary. The beach is hugely popular in summer and restricted for dogs during that peak period, but from September to May dogs are welcome in designated areas. Come in late September or early October for the best of both worlds — mild enough to enjoy, dogs welcome, and the beach almost empty. The setting, with Öskjuhlíð hill behind and the bay opening toward the ocean, is beautiful.
💡 Check the city website for exact seasonal dog restrictions before visiting in summer. Off-season it's one of the most unique beach experiences in the world
