Be honest with yourself before you come: Positano is not a beach destination for dogs. Under Italian coastal rules, dogs are banned from most public beaches from June to September, and the busy private lidos on Spiaggia Grande set their own, usually no-dog, policies. Quieter Fornillo is a little more relaxed off-season, but for a genuine swim with your dog you will need to look to dedicated dog beaches further along the coast toward Salerno.
Positano's iconic main beach below the church, mostly divided into private beach clubs with a small free section. Dogs are generally not welcome on the lidos and are restricted in summer, so treat it as a place to pass through, not to swim.

The smaller, quieter beach west of the centre, reached along the flat Via Positanesi d'America, with a more relaxed feel and a couple of easygoing lidos. It is the more dog-tolerant of the two Positano beaches, especially outside high summer, but always check current signs.

For a real beach day, Italy's dedicated dog beaches (spiagge per cani) lie further east along the Salerno coast rather than in Positano itself. These equipped bau beaches genuinely welcome dogs in summer, unlike the Amalfi lidos.
