Portimão and the Algarve are easygoing with dogs, but a few seasonal and local rules matter, above all the summer heat and the beach bans during bathing season. Plan walks for the cooler hours and you will have a great trip with your pet.
Dogs must be leashed on public streets and promenades, and waste must be picked up. On concessioned Blue Flag beaches such as Praia da Rocha, dogs are banned during the June to September bathing season; use non-concessioned beaches instead. Larger and certain potentially dangerous breeds must also be muzzled in public under Portuguese law.
The Algarve summer is hot and dry, with highs near 29 to 30C in July and August. Walk dogs early morning or after sunset, test paving with your hand before walking on it, and always carry water. Never leave a dog in a parked car, even briefly.
Spring and autumn are ideal for visiting with a dog: warm but not extreme, with quieter beaches and more beaches open to dogs outside the bathing season. Winter is mild and very pleasant for coastal walks. Summer is glorious but hot, so build your days around shade and water.
Combine a morning on the leashed Ria de Alvor boardwalk, watching flamingos and herons across the estuary, with a relaxed lunch on a dog-friendly terrace in Alvor town. It is one of the best low-stress, dog-friendly days in the whole western Algarve.
