Manchester rewards dog owners who get away from the centre: Heaton Park (600 acres, one of Europe's largest municipal parks) and the Mersey Valley give full days of off-leash walking within 20 minutes of the city. The city centre pub scene is genuinely dog-welcoming.
June to August gives the best park conditions and warmest weather (17-20 C), but Manchester is famously rainy and grey even in summer. Pack a waterproof year-round. September and October are excellent: foliage in Heaton Park and Chorlton Meadows, emptier trails, and the city's dog-friendly pub scene is at its most welcoming after the summer tourist peak.

The Mersey Valley trail from Chorlton Meadows to Sale Water Park (8 km, flat, riverbank, almost entirely off-leash) is the best linear walk. Fletcher Moss Botanical Gardens (Didsbury, 5 km south, free, dogs on lead in formal gardens but off-leash on adjacent meadow) rounds out a city-break walking plan.
