Makarska is an easy, dog-friendly base on the Dalmatian coast, with a pine-shaded Riva, two forest parks and an official dog beach all within walking distance. The two things that shape a trip here are the fierce summer heat and the ferry rules to the islands. A little planning around both makes for a relaxed stay with your dog.
Dogs must be kept on a leash in town, in the Sveti Petar and Osejava forest parks and on the promenade; there are no off-leash zones except the Cvitačka dog beach. Always pick up after your dog. In Biokovo Nature Park above the town, free movement of dogs is prohibited, so keep dogs leashed and controlled on the trails.
The Dalmatian summer is intense and the stone Riva and pebble beaches radiate heat well into the evening. Walk your dog early morning or after sunset in July and August, stick to the deep pine shade of the forest parks at midday, and carry water everywhere. Never leave a dog in a parked car; interiors turn lethal within minutes on this coast.
Day trips to Brač and Hvar depend heavily on which boat you take. On Jadrolinija car ferries pets travel free, with small dogs in a carrier and larger dogs leashed and muzzled on the open deck. On fast catamarans only small pets up to about 8 kg in a carrier are allowed, so a large dog must use the car ferry. Carry the EU pet passport and a muzzle for the crossing.
Late spring (May–June) and early autumn (September–October) are ideal for dogs: warm sea, walkable temperatures and the dog beach still in full use without the peak crowds. July and August are very hot and busy, with town beaches off-limits to dogs, so the Cvitačka dog beach and shaded forest walks become essential. Winter is mild and quiet but many seasonal cafés and ferries scale back.
