Dog-Friendly Parks in Madrid

Madrid's largest park and one of the biggest urban parks in the world at 1,700 hectares. A former royal hunting ground that was opened to the public in 1931. For dogs, Casa de Campo is paradise. There are designated off-leash areas throughout the park, but in practice the scale of the terrain means dogs run freely across the pine forests, open meadows, and dirt tracks without issue. The lake at the centre is dog-friendly along its shores. You can easily spend a full day here with a large dog and never feel crowded.

Madrid's iconic central park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Dogs must be kept on a leash in most areas, but there is a designated off-leash enclosure near the Puerta de Hierro entrance on the northern side of the park. The paths around the Estanque Grande (the rowing lake) are perfect for a morning walk with your dog. The park covers 125 hectares with rose gardens, fountains, and shaded avenues. Despite the leash rule, Retiro is one of the most pleasant dog-walking experiences in any European capital.

A stunning 10-kilometre riverside park running along the Manzanares river through the western edge of the city. Madrid Río was created when the M-30 motorway was buried underground, transforming a former traffic artery into a world-class public space. For dogs, it is exceptional: multiple designated off-leash zones, wide sandy river banks for paddling in summer, and a smooth, car-free path network for running. The park links Casa de Campo to the south of the city in one continuous green corridor.

One of Madrid's hidden gems: a late-18th-century romantic garden created by the Duchess of Osuna, with lakes, follies, a labyrinth, and wide shaded avenues. Dogs are permitted on leash and the atmosphere is far more tranquil than the central parks. El Capricho is only open on weekends and public holidays, which actually keeps it from becoming overcrowded. The combination of historical garden design and calm woodland paths makes it one of the most pleasant leash-walk experiences in Madrid.
