Waterfront & Outdoor Swimming for Dogs in Madrid

The Manzanares river running through the Madrid Río park is shallow, clean (significantly cleaned up after a major EU-funded restoration), and in summer provides the closest thing to a riverside beach that Madrid can offer. Dogs wade freely in the river sections without steps or barriers. The sandy banks are wide and uncrowded compared to beaches, and the park's off-leash zones directly adjoin the water. Between July and September the sections near Puente de Praga are especially popular with dog owners.

The artificial lake at the heart of Casa de Campo is one of Madrid's most popular weekend destinations. Swimming in the lake is not officially permitted, but the dog-friendly shores along the southern and western edges are perfect for paddling and cooling off. The area around the lake has picnic lawns, shade trees, and plenty of space for dogs to run. Rowing boats can be rented at weekends — dogs are sometimes permitted with cooperative rowers. A very complete half-day outing from any part of Madrid.

A large reservoir in the Sierra de Guadarrama, an hour's drive north of Madrid, that offers genuine natural waterfront access for dogs. The shores around Manzanares el Real are rocky and pine-fringed, and dogs swim freely in the reservoir at multiple access points. The village of Manzanares el Real has a medieval castle, and the surrounding Pedriza massif is one of the best hiking areas in the entire Madrid region.
