Lucca is arguably Italy's easiest city for dogs: car-free walled centre fully walkable in 15 min, 4.2 km flat grassy ramparts as the daily walk, strong trattoria culture, and Versilia dog beaches 30 min west. The only constraints are summer humidity and lack of a 24/7 vet.
April–June and September–October are ideal: 15–22°C, low humidity, terraces in full swing. Avoid July–August (25-30°C with brutal Tuscan humidity, mass tourism) and December (rainy). The Lucca Comics festival (early November) packs hotels — book months ahead.
The 4.2 km loop on top of the walls functions as Lucca's outdoor living room — locals jog at dawn, cycle to work, push prams in the afternoon, and walk dogs at sunset. Watch for cyclists; keep dogs on a short lead on the busy western section near Porta San Donato.
