La Spezia makes an excellent dog-friendly base for the Cinque Terre and the Gulf of Poets, with a walkable centre, a shaded seafront and easy regional trains. A few local rules and summer-heat habits to know before you go.
Dogs must be leashed on streets, in the public gardens and on the seafront, and owners must carry a muzzle to put on if asked and on public transport. Dog waste must be picked up. In the Cinque Terre National Park dogs are allowed on trails only on a leash, and they are banned from the Cinque Terre village beaches entirely.
Ligurian summers are hot and humid from June to September. Walk dogs early morning or after sunset, keep to the shaded palm-lined gardens, and test pavement and rock with your hand before letting your dog walk on it. The exposed Cinque Terre cliff trails offer little shade, so carry plenty of water and avoid the midday hours.
The regional train from La Spezia Centrale is the easiest dog-friendly route: small dogs in a carrier ride free, larger dogs travel on a leash and muzzle on a reduced-fare ticket. Buy the Cinque Terre Card at the station to cover trains and trail fees (a large dog needs a child ticket). The seasonal ferry from the Morin pier is a calmer alternative in peak summer.
Late spring (May-June) and early autumn (September-October) are ideal: warm sea, walkable trails and fewer crowds. July and August are hot, humid and very busy, with limited daytime beach access for dogs. In the off-season (October-April) dogs can swim freely all day at the Lerici beaches.
