The 16th-century Ananuri fortress stands above the turquoise Zhinvali reservoir on the Georgian Military Highway. The fortress walls and churches are open and dogs walk on-leash throughout the compound. The combination of medieval stone towers, snow-capped mountains, and the reservoir is the most photogenic stop on the Tbilisi-Kazbegi road.
