Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, unfolds in a steep Caucasus valley along the Mtkvari (Kura) river, at the crossroads between Europe and Asia. Legend credits its 5th-century founding to King Vakhtang Gorgasali, who discovered its warm sulphur springs; the city's very name comes from the Georgian tbili, meaning warm. A coveted junction, it was in turn Persian, Ottoman, Russian and Soviet, and that mingling shows in its old town, where Orthodox churches, a mosque, a synagogue and domed bathhouses stand side by side. Since independence in 1991, Tbilisi has blended carved-wood lanes, restored facades and bold contemporary architecture. For a dog owner it is a surprisingly welcoming city: Georgia tolerates and cares for its street dogs, ear-tagged after sterilisation and vaccination, and its parks and hills offer fine walks.
The historic sulphur-bath district, recognisable by its brick domes and the smell of sulphur, the legendary cradle of the city at the foot of the fortress. You can wander the lanes and up to the Leghvtakhevi waterfall freely with a leashed dog; the baths themselves, indoors, are not open to pets.
A 4th-century fortress crowning the old town, reached on foot or by cable car from Rike Park, its ramparts taking in the whole of Tbilisi and the valley. The open ramparts are walkable with a leashed dog; the cable-car cabin usually admits small held dogs, but check with the attendant before boarding.
A monumental aluminium statue on the Sololaki ridge, a wine bowl in one hand for friends, a sword in the other for enemies, an emblem of the Georgian spirit. The viewpoint and the ridge path leading to it are done with a leashed dog; the panorama over the city and the Mtkvari is splendid at sunset.
A modern riverside park linked to the old town by the Peace Bridge, a glass-and-steel footbridge lit up at night. Lawns, fountains and paths make for pleasant walks with a leashed dog, and it is the departure point of the cable car to Narikala; bring water, as shade is limited in summer.
An amusement park and viewpoint atop the sacred Mtatsminda hill, reached by a historic funicular, giving the highest view over Tbilisi. The open paths and gardens welcome leashed dogs; the funicular usually admits small held dogs, though the rides themselves are off-limits to them.
A large leafy park in the residential Vake district, one of the city's green lungs, with a monumental fountain, shaded avenues and wooded slopes climbing toward Turtle Lake. It is the ideal place for a long walk with a leashed dog away from traffic, much used by locals and their pets.
