Ars-en-Ré, one of the 'plus beaux villages de France', gathers its café life around the square beneath its famous black-and-white church spire, a landmark that once guided ships across the salt marshes. The terraces here are smaller and quieter than Saint-Martin, with a village rhythm that suits an unhurried lunch with a dog. Crêperies, a wine bar, and a couple of bistros put out tables under the trees, and dogs are entirely at home. The village sits at the edge of the marais salants, so it is a natural stop on a cycling loop out to the salt pans and the Phare des Baleines.
