Dog-Friendly Beaches on Île de Ré

The main beach of Le Bois-Plage is a long, wide stretch of Atlantic sand backed by the pine forest and dunes, and the island's default family beach. Outside the summer ban dogs are welcome on a lead along the sand, and the firm, gently shelving beach is excellent for a run and a paddle in the shallows. The commune sets its own arrêté with a daytime dog ban in July and August on the main bathing zone, so check the access signs in high season; in the shoulder months the beach is gloriously empty and dog-friendly. The adjacent pine forest gives shade for breaks, and the cycling network reaches the beach directly so you can arrive with the dog in the basket.

La Couarde, in the centre of the island, has one of the broadest and most relaxed beaches on Île de Ré, with vast firm sand at low tide and a calmer, family feel than the surf-exposed south. The commune is among the more dog-tolerant: outside high summer, leashed dogs walk the sand freely, and the village keeps designated tolerated stretches at the margins even in season, signposted at the access points. The shallow water and the huge expanse of low-tide sand make it ideal for a long off-season walk. The Route des Plages cycle path runs behind the dunes, so cycling here with the dog is easy. Always check the seasonal arrêté at the beach entrance, which the commune updates each summer.

Rivedoux-Plage is the first village over the bridge, so its beaches are the most convenient if you arrive by car and want a quick stop before settling in. The Plage Sud is sheltered and shallow, with views back to the bridge and La Rochelle, and a calmer, less surf-driven character than the west coast. The commune maintains dog-tolerated zones and the usual off-season welcome with a summer daytime ban on the main bathing area; the access signs spell out the current rules. Because it faces the mainland it is more protected from the Atlantic swell, which makes it a gentle option for older or nervous dogs. A practical first or last beach of an island trip, ten minutes from the bridge toll.
