Heraklion has signed Bau-Beach (dog beach) zones at Amoudara west and Karteros east of town — both year-round. For untouched coves, drive 30 min east to Agia Pelagia or 45 min south-west to Matala.
Amoudara, 71414 Heraklion
The closest official dog beach to the centre, 5 km west. Sandy with a gentle slope, signed Bau-Beach zone of about 300 m. Open year-round, busiest May–September.
💡 Bus 6 or 26 from Plateia Eleftherias every 20 min. The Bau-Beach is at the western end — walk 10 min along the promenade from the bus stop.
Karteros, 71500 Heraklion
Long, less-developed beach 7 km east of Heraklion. The eastern half functions as the de facto dog beach — locals walk dogs off-leash here daily. Sandy, with cedar trees as backdrop.
💡 Park at the eastern lot (Karteros II). Less busy than Amoudara, perfect for shy dogs.
Agia Pelagia, 71500 Heraklion
Resort village 25 km north-west, with the small Mononaftis cove 1 km north of the main beach — pebble shore, crystal water, no umbrellas. Dogs welcome by default in this quieter cove.
💡 30 min by car (rental needed; no direct bus). Bring water shoes for the pebbles. Avoid Mononaftis in July weekends — locals discover it too.
