Essential Tips for Visiting Granada with a Dog

Granada is one of the hottest cities in Spain in summer. Pavements can reach 60°C in direct afternoon sun, fatal to dog paws within minutes. Walk only in early morning (before 09:00) or after 20:00. Carry water and offer it every 20 minutes. Choose shaded routes through the Albaicín lanes rather than open plazas. In a heatwave, skip outdoor activity entirely during the day.

The Alhambra palace and Nasrid rooms do not allow dogs (except accredited guide dogs). However, the Paseo de los Tristes below the Alhambra walls is a public street where dogs on leads are welcome, with beautiful views up to the palace. Plan visits to the Alhambra interior on a day when your dog can be left safely at the hotel, or use a local pet-sitter for the 2–3 hours of the visit.

Granada is famous for its chocolate and sweet shops, particularly the traditional churros con chocolate culture. Dropped chocolate, chocolate-dipped churros, and sweet wrappers on café terraces and pavements are a constant temptation for dogs. Chocolate is toxic to dogs (theobromine poisoning). Keep a close watch at ground level, especially around the main tourist cafe areas near Plaza Nueva and Calle Elvira.
