Gran Canaria is one of Europe's premier year-round winter-sun escapes, and for EU travellers it is gloriously simple: pet passport, microchip, rabies, no quarantine, and a fortnight of 22 C in January. Plan around three things: the heat and sun (even in winter), the rules on which beaches and dune areas dogs can use, and the island's huge altitude range, where the cool mountains around Roque Nublo and Tejeda are a welcome contrast to the resort coast.
Gran Canaria's selling point is a mild winter: the south resorts sit around 21-24 C from December to March, ideal for active dogs that struggle in mainland summers. But the sun is strong year-round, and from June to September coastal asphalt and dark-sand beaches can burn paw pads in seconds at midday. Walk early or after sunset, carry water everywhere, and use the cool mountain interior (Roque Nublo, Tejeda, Cruz de Tejeda) for midday breaks. The trade winds keep the coast comfortable but the sun on the skin is deceptively intense.
Despite feeling far-flung, the Canary Islands are part of Spain and the EU, so for EU travellers there is no quarantine and no special border process: an EU pet passport, an ISO microchip and an in-date rabies vaccination cover the whole trip. That makes Gran Canaria one of the easiest long-haul-feeling winter escapes for a European dog owner. The main planning effort is the flight itself, confirm your airline's cabin or hold rules, carrier dimensions and per-flight pet limits, and book the pet slot when you book your seat.
Dogs must be leashed in public spaces, and dogs classed as potentially dangerous (PPP breeds under Spanish law) must wear a muzzle and a short leash in public. The big resort beaches at Maspalomas and Las Canteras and the protected Maspalomas dune reserve do not allow dogs; for beach time use a designated dog beach such as El Burrero or Playa del Cardรณn. Designations and signage can change, so check the current Cabildo or town hall notices and always pick up after your dog.
