Gozo is a slow, rural, deeply pet-relaxed island, but it sits in a hot Mediterranean climate with strict beach rules and one big entry requirement. Get the heat management, the beach rules and the tapeworm paperwork right and the rest of the trip is wonderfully easy with a dog.
From June to September Gozo is hot and sun-baked, with little natural shade on the coast. Walk dogs at dawn and after sunset, test paving with your hand before walking (if it is too hot for your palm it burns paws), carry water on every outing, and never leave a dog in a parked car, where temperatures turn lethal within minutes.
Dogs are not allowed on sandy beaches at any time in Malta and Gozo, and are banned from Blue Flag beaches in summer. They are welcome on rocky beaches year-round. Gozo's two official dog beaches are Qbajjar Bay and Ras il-Hobz. The famous red-sand Ramla Bay is off-limits to dogs.
Malta is a tapeworm-free country. Dogs must have a vet-administered tapeworm (Echinococcus) treatment recorded in the pet passport 1 to 5 days before arrival, on top of microchip, rabies vaccination and EU pet passport. This is enforced strictly. Cats are exempt from the tapeworm rule.
Spring (April to early June) and autumn (late September to November) are ideal for a dog: warm sea, walkable temperatures and quiet trails. High summer is intense and best managed around dawn and dusk. Winters are mild and green, making Gozo a genuine year-round dog destination.
