Edinburgh is one of the most dog-welcoming cities in the UK, but a few local specifics will make the experience significantly better for both you and your pet.
May to early July and September to October are the sweet spots. Average highs reach 17-18 C and the city's parks and green spaces are at their best. Avoid August (Edinburgh Fringe) when the Old Town becomes extremely congested, and the last week of December and New Year (Hogmanay) when fireworks, crowds, and noise make the city stressful for dogs.
From the EU you need: ISO microchip, valid rabies vaccination (at least 21 days old, not expired), and a GB Animal Health Certificate (AHC) issued by an EU official vet (OV) within 10 days of arrival. The AHC is valid 4 months for onward EU travel and 4 months for return. Tapeworm treatment is required only for return travel to Ireland, Finland, Malta or Norway.
The classic dog-friendly circuit covers Arthur's Seat (Holyrood Park, mostly off-leash on the upper slopes), the Water of Leith Walkway from Balerno to Leith (12 miles, almost entirely off-leash through woods and along the river), and the Meadows (a 3 km long green space with unrestricted dog access). The Old Town streets are paved and dog-friendly but crowded in high season.
