Cefalù is a relaxed Sicilian seaside town where leashed dogs are a common sight in the old-town lanes and along the Lungomare. The two things that shape a dog trip here are the intense summer heat and the seasonal beach rules. A little planning around timing and water makes it an easy, rewarding place to visit with a dog.
Dogs must be kept on a leash of maximum 1.5 metres in public areas, and owners must carry a muzzle to put on if requested. Owners must clean up after their dog, with fines for fouling across Italian municipalities. Access to public beaches and bathing areas is regulated locally and is often restricted during summer bathing hours.
Sicilian summer heat is intense from June to September, and stone lanes, sand and the bare rock of La Rocca radiate heat that can burn paws by midday. Walk your dog before about 10:00 and after 18:00, test the ground with your hand, and always carry water. Never leave a dog in a parked car.
Leashed dogs are welcome on the streets and squares of the old town, on the Lungomare promenade and at many seafront and old-town restaurant terraces. They are not allowed inside the cathedral or indoor museums, though the cathedral square and exterior are open to walk around. Outdoor and terrace settings are your best bet.
Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) are ideal for a dog, with warm but manageable temperatures and easier beach access out of peak bathing season. July and August are very hot and crowded, with the tightest beach restrictions. Winter is mild and quiet, and dogs are comfortable on the coastal walks.
