Cassis is a delight with a dog around the port and the vineyards, but it comes with two big caveats that catch visitors out: dogs are largely banned from the core Calanques National Park, and the Provenรงal summer combines fierce heat with fire-risk closures of the massif. Get those two things right and the rest is easy.
Dogs are largely prohibited in the core of the Calanques National Park, even on a leash, to protect its fragile wildlife. On the park periphery, such as the Port-Miou calanque and the Sentier du Petit Prince, leashed dogs are tolerated, but even there they are banned entirely from 1 April to 30 June for bird nesting. Plan your dog walks on the vineyard lanes and village edges instead, and never let a dog off-leash on park trails.
Between 1 June and 30 September the Bouches-du-Rhone massifs, including the Calanques, are subject to daily fire-risk access rules. When the day's rating is red, access is forbidden outright, for everyone. Check the Mes Calanques app or the prefecture map each morning before you set out. Add the brutal midday heat and the sun-baked limestone, and the only sensible approach is to walk dogs at dawn or dusk, carry plenty of water, and never leave a dog in a parked car.
The main town beaches (Grande Mer, Bestouan) ban dogs during the summer bathing season, so do not count on a beach day with your dog in July or August. The village itself is the easy part: the port, the old cobbled streets and the quayside terraces are all dog-friendly, and a leashed dog is a normal sight around the harbour. Carry poop bags; the village is well kept and locals expect you to clean up.
For a dog, late spring (after the nesting closure) and early autumn are ideal: warm, sunny, and free of both the worst heat and the summer fire-risk closures. September and October are especially good, with swimmable sea, open trails and far fewer crowds. High summer is beautiful but hard work with a dog, between the heat, the beach bans and the daily massif restrictions.
