Carcassonne is small enough to be walked end-to-end with a dog, but the brutal summer heat and the cobbles of La Cité change the rules dramatically. Visit in April–June or September–October if possible; avoid July–August unless you can stick to early-morning and evening outings. The city is a year-round day-tripper magnet, expect 4 million annual visitors squeezed into the 11-hectare medieval city, weekends and afternoons in summer are extremely crowded which is exhausting for dogs.

Carcassonne is one of the four hottest département capitals in France in summer, regularly hitting 35–38 °C in July and August. The pale limestone pavements of La Cité reflect the heat and can reach 45 °C on a sunny afternoon, enough to burn pads within minutes. Cobbles add a sprained-wrist risk for small dogs. The combination of heat, cobbles and 4 million annual visitors makes a midday August visit with a dog actively dangerous. Either come in shoulder season or plan all Cité visits before 10:00 or after 19:30.
